How to Recognize If It’s Your Head (ego) or Your Heart (intuition)

I have been a student of spiritual studies for over twenty years now. Throughout that time, there have been sooo many moments where I have wondered what the “right” thing to do was. I have also often asked (and even begged) for guidance only to poo poo it away in disbelief when it came – later finding out that my gut was right all along! Having said this, I thought I would share some of the ways that I have learned to TRUST my intuition while offering you some simple tools that will help you discern whether it’s your ego or your intuition guiding you:

  1. Tune into your body. Your body is your greatest barometer. It will NEVER steer you wrong. If something doesn’t feel good, then it’s not in alignment for you at this time. You just can’t BS energy, no matter how much you think you want it. For example, think of a time when you first met a romantic interest, and even though you felt attracted to them, you KNEW that this was not a good fit. Maybe there were red neon flashing lights all around and STILL you insisted on painting those red flags green only to later find out that your initial instinct was right. (Yep, me too … how do think I learned all of this?!) Trust your body. LISTEN to its innate wisdom. Just like your body knows how to heal itself, your body also knows when something or someone is not in alignment for your highest good.
  2. Ideas, inspiration and information seem to just come out of nowhere. Now, let me clarify this a bit more. Sometimes our head wants to tell us that eating the whole container of Ben & Jerry’s is a great idea and will help us feel better instead of dealing with whatever is REALLY going on. That’s different, and you can usually tell because this will almost always be followed by a feeling of shame or guilt. What I’m talking about are those moments (I like to call them God shots) when you are just divinely inspired to pick up the phone and make that call only to find out that the person you were thinking of needed support in that very moment. Or perhaps you are guided to follow up on a lead for a position you applied for in the past and someone just happened to quit last week, creating an opening for you. Here’s a hint: These ”hunches” or ”hits’” as some people like to call them, are almost always accompanied by a boost in energy, creating a feeling of excitement  and joy within you. You will often feel a sense of urgency to take action … not from a place of fear, but from a place of peace.
  3. There are CONSISTENT signs everywhere. Maybe you keep hearing the same message in different forms repeatedly from different sources all within a short period of time. LISTEN! Trust that the information you are receiving is real and valid. The Universe is offering you support and guidance on what to do next. TRUST and TAKE ACTION.

The main thing to remember is that you are connected to and Divinely guided by the life force energy of Universal Love at all times. That means that you are never alone. Ask for help. Practice becoming quiet. Meditate. Create the space for a relationship with Spirit. And GIVE THANKS! You will be amazed at the amount of magic and miracles all around you.
