We’ve been discussing the importance of meditation over the past few weeks, so I thought it would be fun to talk a little bit about creating a sacred space.

Where do you meditate?

Lately, my spot has been on the couch in our family room with (and sometimes without) some nice, calming music. I also spend a lot of time in the bath tub and on my yoga mat. I have small altar near my mat where I often light a candle and incense and practice some deep breathing for several minutes.

Truth be told, I am itching to get outside to do it, but it’s just too stinkin’ hot still here in The Valley of the Sun. Ooooh! How I long for those cool mornings where I can sit outside and listen to the birds sing while sipping my tea. Of course, it makes no difference where you meditate (just that you do), but I thought it might be fun to explore this a little more so here’s a sneak peak from my new book “How to Meditate Using Guided Imagery.

Many people find it helpful to have a special space within their home that is solely dedicated to their daily meditation practice; somewhere they can completely relax, reflect, go inside, realign with their consciousness, and get centered. It is all about creating a nook where they feel secure and immediately experience inner peace upon entering it. This sanctuary allows them to detach from the worries of life and renew their connection with their spirit or inner self. Some even find it helpful to have altars with different mementos such as crystals, pictures, and other things that remind them of their connection to their higher power.

Then, there are those who find solace on their yoga mat or sitting at the table drinking a hot cup of coffee or tea. Other people feel much more connected out in nature, sauntering among the trees and feeling the healing, Divine frequency emitted by Mother Earth, and still others prefer to attend church to nurture their inner connection. Sometimes lighting a candle or burning incense brings a sense of calm and wellbeing. You may also consider burning white desert sage to bless your space and clear away the negative energy in the environment. If you are sensitive to smoke, you may prefer aromatherapy sprays made out of essential oils to utilize in the same way.

The important thing is to create an ambience meant for introspection that encourages silence and calls out to your soul. There is no right or wrong way to go about this; whatever inspires your soul and fills you with positive energy, works just fine.
